Bluffing Fundamentals

Semi-bluffs, blockers, and how to calculate fold equity.

A bluff works when your opponent folds a better hand. A semi-bluff is a bluff with equity โ€” even if called, you have outs to improve. Semi-bluffs are far safer and more powerful.

Bluff checklist
Fold equity
Opponent must be capable of folding. Don't bluff calling stations.
Blockers
Hold cards that block opponent's strong hands (e.g., bluff with the A when flush draws are possible).
Credible story
Your bet sizes and board texture should tell a consistent story from preflop onwards.
Outs as backup
Prefer bluffing with draws โ€” if called you still have a chance to win.
Break-even bluff frequency: If you bet 50% of the pot, your opponent needs to fold more than 33% of the time for the bluff to be immediately profitable. Bet sizing and fold equity are inseparable.
